PORTUGUESE ARCHITECTS WIN THE PREMIER PHOENIX CEMETERY DESIGN AWARD

John Clark (centre), Assessors chairman, with Premier Award winners Jose Cadilhe and Emanuel Fontoura.
An imaginative design for the extension to the inner-city Sendim Cemetery in Matisinhos, Portugal wins young architect Jose Cadilhe first prize in the 2006 Phoenix Awards International Competition.
Preliminary ideas were drawn up by Jose in 2005 when he was still a student in Porto, and won him Premier Award Total Concept category second prize last year. Extending the plans and drawings for the whole project with fellow architect Emanuel Fontoura has now won the duo the 2006 Premier Award first prize of £1,000, sponsored by Bridge Insurance Brokers Ltd, a commemorative plaque created and donated by T.E. Tilley Stonemasons, of Brighton, Sussex, UK together with certificated.
Awards assessors praised the 'good, clear presentation' of the work, which included a good general area site plan showing how the immense improvement in public space provision with a low level courtyard and roof-top garden is in-keeping in Matosinhos where funeral processions are still a very common practice and where ther cemetery is often seen as a place for meeting and prolonged visits and permanency in its interior - justified by the strong tradition and the population's relationship with and close proximity to the sea.

Anton Matthews with his certificate and Topple tester silver salver trophy presented by John Clark OBE, chairman of the assessors.
The Site Safety Award goes for the second year running to Anton Matthews, a memorial mason from Bognor Regis, West Sussex, for his design for a lift-out monument foundation. The assessors felt this deserved an 'A' for effort and to be commended for the idea of using monoliths. Anton Matthews wins the Pearson Panke ToppleTester perpetual silver salver, £100 and a certificate.
HIGHLY COMMENDED
Mark Fenton, Preston, UK

Architect Mark Fenton, right, receives his Highly Commended Certificate from Chancellor Timothy Briden.
The assessors also concluded that a 'Highly Commended' certificate be awarded in the Premier Award Total Concept Design category to Preston garden designer Mark Fenton for his design for an extension to an exisiting Church of England churchyard.
COMMENDED
Giuliano Franzoi, Trento, ITALY

Architect Giuliano Franzoi of the Comune Di Trento, Italy, with his Commended Certificate.
A 'Commended' certificate to was awarded to Giuliano Franzoi for his design for a Garden of Remembrance and Funeral House as an extension to the Trento Cemetery in Italy.
Disappointingly, no entries were received for the 'Green Waste' disposal category, sponsored by the British Association of Landscape Industries (BALI), nor for the Iver Parish Church project, sponsored by Iver Parish Council. However, it is hoped that a new category for 2007, for a design for a multi-faith cemetery will prove more attractive. Details will be available later this year.
Hat-trick winner- 2003, 2004 and 2005 - architect Peter Hutchinson of Belfast, Northern Ireland, also treated the audience to a slide presentation of the progess of his 2005 Premier Award winning entry for a 20-acre extension for the Blaris Muncipal Cemetery in Lisburn, County Down, Northern Ireland. "Unfortunately, the local authority is being rather over-cautious", said Peter. "They are trying too hard to 'play it safe' and so have not incorporated some of the more original features of the design that I felt would make the place attractive to visitors. It does still work, but not as well as I would have liked".
